Australian visas

Every Australian visa, by category and subclass, including the programs now closed to new applications. Which visa fits your circumstances is what an assessment establishes.

( The whole framework )

Every visa, by category

The categories the Department of Home Affairs uses. The colour says what kind of visa it is. Which visa fits depends on your circumstances, and that is what an assessment works out.

( Beyond the subclass )

What every application must satisfy

Choosing a visa is only the start. Almost every application is also assessed against public interest criteria and framework rules that sit outside the subclass itself.

Health

Most applicants complete health examinations. Some visas allow a health waiver where cost or access concerns can be offset; others apply the requirement with no waiver available.

Character

Character requirements apply across the framework: police certificates, disclosure of history, and assessment against the character test.

Security and debts

Security assessments and outstanding debts to the Commonwealth can affect a grant. Debts are usually resolved, or under arrangement, before approval.

Genuine entrant tests

Temporary visas commonly assess whether the stay is genuinely temporary: circumstances, incentives to return and immigration history all weigh in.

Visa conditions

Granted visas carry conditions, among them work limits, study limits, health insurance and no-further-stay conditions, that shape what is possible next.

Sponsorship and protections

Sponsored visas create obligations for sponsors, and the framework includes protections, including the family violence provisions in partner matters.

General information only. Which criteria apply, and how, depends on the visa and the circumstances; that is what an assessment works out.
