( For shorter and temporary stays )
Visitor, graduate and temporary visas
Visitor, working holiday, graduate, training and short-term work visas, and advice on the conditions each one carries.
( The situation )
Who this service is for
For people whose plans are shorter or temporary: a visit, a working holiday, time to work after graduating, workplace training, or specialised short-term work in Australia. We advise students who are already enrolled on their visa and its conditions; we do not arrange admission to a course.
General information only. This is not immigration assistance and does not take your circumstances into account. Migration law changes frequently. Confirm the current position before acting.

( How we can help )
- A clear view of the temporary visa that fits the purpose of the stay
- The conditions each visa carries, and what they mean for work, study and travel
- Graduate visa eligibility, checked before the course ends, and the onward options
- Training, temporary activity and short-term specialist arrangements, for the business and the applicant together
Occupation lists
Graduate and post-study pathways lead into skilled visas, where occupation decides what is available. It is worth checking where a qualification leads before the course ends.

Three roads for a shorter or temporary stay
The purpose of the stay decides the visa. A visit, a working holiday or the time after a course, and training or specialised work each have their own.
The purpose of your stay
- 01To visit
Visitor (600), ETA (601) and eVisitor (651)
For tourism, visiting family and friends, and business visitor activities. Which one applies depends on your passport: the ETA and the eVisitor are for eligible passport holders; the Visitor visa is for everyone else, for longer stays, and for sponsored family visits.
Our part
We advise which applies, how long a stay can be, and how to present the application where a visitor visa has been refused before.
- Short stays
- By passport
- Not for work
- 02To work and travel, or after a course
Working Holiday (417), Work and Holiday (462) and Temporary Graduate (485)
A year of travel with the right to work for younger people from partner countries, with further years available after specified work. For a graduate of an Australian course, time to live and work here after an eligible qualification; the stream and the length depend on the qualification, and the application has its own window.
Our part
We confirm eligibility and timing, and for graduates we check the qualification against the visa before the course ends, so the application is lodged in time and in the right stream.
- Work permitted
- Post-study work
- Windows apply
- 03To train or work for a short time
Training (407), Temporary Activity (408) and Short Stay Specialist (400)
Workplace-based training with an approved sponsor; a specific activity such as research, an event or entertainment; or highly specialised short-term work that cannot reasonably be found in Australia. Each has a sponsor or employer side as well as an applicant side.
Our part
We act for the business and the applicant together, so that the sponsorship, the nomination where one is needed, and the visa line up.
- Sponsored
- Purpose-specific
- Short term
The condition
A temporary visa is granted for its purpose, and kept by it.
Each of these visas carries conditions: on work, on study, on how long a stay can be, and on applying for another visa from inside Australia. Knowing them before travel avoids the problems that are hardest to fix afterwards. Students who are already enrolled can ask us about their visa and its conditions; we do not arrange admission to a course.

Governing law
Advice on visitor, graduate and temporary visas rests on the Migration Act 1958 and the Migration Regulations 1994, and on the legislative instruments made under them.
