The first round of 2026-27 issued 20,000 Skilled Independent (subclass 189) invitations in a single day, twice the largest round of the year before. No family-sponsored subclass 491 invitations were issued. 159 occupations were invited, at minimum scores from 65 to 100 points.

Five things the round shows

  1. The trades held the floor

    44 occupations were invited at 65 points, among them carpenters, bricklayers, electricians, plumbers, drainers, glaziers, tilers and plasterers, most with tie-break dates in August to October 2026: an expression of interest lodged weeks before the round was enough.

  2. Nursing and medicine at 70, reaching back a year

    Every registered nurse specialisation, midwives, nurse practitioners, general practitioners, physiotherapists and occupational therapists were invited at 70 points, with tie-break dates in 2025. The queue at 70 is long enough that the round reached expressions of interest lodged a year or more earlier.

  3. Scores eased across most of the table

    77 occupations were invited at a lower minimum than on 4 June 2026 and 50 at the same minimum. Solicitor went from 80 to 65, Obstetrician and Gynaecologist from 85 to 70, and a run of trades and environmental occupations fell from 80 to the floor. 9 tightened, Secondary School Teacher from 75 to 80 and Clinical Psychologist most sharply, from 75 to 90.

  4. The top of the scale

    ICT Security Specialist and Urologist were invited at 100 points; Electronics Engineer, Marine Biologist and Zoologist at 95; the five telecommunications occupations at 85. ICT Security Specialist carried a tie-break date of November 2024, the oldest in the table.

  5. 8 occupations not seen in 2025-26

    Fitter-Welder, Horse Trainer, ICT Security Specialist, Locksmith, Neurosurgeon, Nursing Clinical Director, Radiocommunications Technician and Technical Cable Jointer received invitations for the first time in this run of rounds.
